Grandmaster Peter M. Rose Dear Students and Friends,

Fall Greetings!  Well, here in New England this was the Summer that wasn't! We had cold rain and dense fog up until after the 4th of July. Then a couple of weeks of nice weather followed by more rain and fog. This was to be repeated all through the Summer. I hope wherever you are that you fared better than we did!

We have had 4 certified black belt promotions recently. Congratulations to Shodans David Kelly (#36 - presented posthumously), Joanne Edwards (#37), Wally Van Sickle (#38), and Michael George (#39). Additional congratulations to Shodan George on the establishment of his program "Oak Forrest Karate Club" in Chandler, TX. It is great to see this kind of activity and excitement. We provide the canvas, but you as members are the true artists. Keep painting and creating great things!

There has been such a recent spat of computer virus attacks. I hope you have been able to avoid them. Keep your virus definations up to date! Always use the automatic update feature; don't trust yourself to remember to dial in for updates. If you get a virus, don't try to deal with it yourself unless you know exactly what you are doing! My wife was having problems and we did not know what was causing it so she called the computer manufacturer for help. The tech recommended that she select certain options which would re-format her hard drive and re-install the operating system. Fortunately, she is pretty savy about such things and mentioned to the tech that if she did as he instructed she would lose all her installed programs and all the data. He indicated that was the only way to clean her system. I don't think so. Thank you very much. Goooooood byeeeeeeeeeeeee! She called a friend and was able to get into what is called "safe mode", back up her data, and then make some adjustments to the system that finally allowed full access so she could download virus patches and rid herself of the problems. Some advice from the manufacturer. Moral of the story: trust no one to tell you what to do with your system unless you know exactly what the consequences of that action are and have exhausted every other means.

I'm glad to see good participation from our Program Directors in the "What's Happening" section. It's important that you let us know of major things going on in your program. It's not necessary to list every promotion or everything that you did, but it is nice for everyone to hear what your club has been up to over the previous six months. And a few pictures add a nice touch as well! I may not publish everything you send in, but I hope I capture the best of what you have done! You all have a lot of neat things going on in your programs and it's nice to share that with everyone!

By the way, many programs have instituted private "groups" on the internet. Yahoo Groups is one such place that has very nice capabilities. Only members can access the site so messages posted to private areas are only seen by the members. You can store pictures and documents there as well. Check it out, it may be something that your program could benefit from.

In our art,
Grandmaster
Grandmaster Peter M. Rose

ps — Please note that our Association Home Page provides a section to link to individule Program web sites. If your Program has a web site, send me the URL and I will list you there. Get on the web! The last 4 members who have joined my program found Rose School of Karate on a web search for karate programs! And if your program doen't have a website, I'd be happy to put a page together for you and host it on my server. Send me an email and let me know if you are interested.
